BUDAPEST, 22 June 2002—A second Regional Consultation for stakeholders in oil, gas and mining activities closed today with broad agreement on ways the World Bank should change in the interests of poverty reduction through sustainable development. Selected representatives of civil society, companies, government and the World Bank agreed on ten cross-cutting areas where change would be necessary for continued Bank involvement in extraction activities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

BUDAPEST, 20 June 2002—A second Regional Consultation for stakeholders in oil, gas and mining got under way in Budapest, Hungary today. Organized by the Extractive Industries Review (EIR), the meeting brings together civil society, industry executives, government officials and staff of the World Bank Group. Consultation will prepare recommendations for a future role of the World Bank in the three sectors, including the possibility of its withdrawal.

In line with the first regional consultation in Brazil, April 2002, the Budapest meeting will examine key development issues relating to the extractive industries, with a specific focus on World Bank Group supported projects in Eastern Europe, the Former Soviet Union and Central Asia.
